Tampa did not let down their fans and the summary of this game was best described by historian Phil Bolsta, "What a game! What a finish! With apologies to Don Larsen’s perfect game in 1956, Game Four was the most exciting, memorable, and awesome non-elimination World Series game EVER!"īolsta breaking it down: "In the bottom of the ninth, one run down and one strike away from defeat, the Rays’ Brett Phillips, who had been left off Tampa Bay’s roster for the ALCS and hadn’t had a hit in a full month, lined a single into right field for his first postseason hit ever… and then the craziness started… and escalated by the second! Centerfielder Chris Taylor misplayed the ball, then fired to cutoff man Max Muncy, who wheeled around and threw to catcher Will Smith, but the ball glanced off the glove of the Fresh Prince as he started his sweep tag. Game 4 was a near-must win situation for the Rays, as teams who went down 3-1 during a World Series, lost 40 of the previous 46 Fall Classics. Buehler no-hit the Rays through the first four frames, and only surrended three hits after that, while striking out ten, a dominating win for the ace twirler. LA scored two more runs in the fourth inning, another two runs in the fith, and added an unnecessary insurance run in the sixth. Justin Turner hit a solo home run off Morton in the first inning for the first run of the game, and tied Duke Snider for the most postseason home runs in Dodgers history with 11. Walker Buehler started Game 3 for the Dodgers, and the Rays countered with Charlie Morton.

They also brought their bats, starting with Brandon Lowe, who hit a solo homer off Tony Gonsolin in the first inning to give the Rays their first lead of the series, Two runs in the fourth, two more in the fifth, and an insurance run in the sixth kept them in the lead during the entire (6-4) contest. The Rays brought out their ace for Game 2, and Blake Snell did not disappoint, not surrendering a hit until the 4th inning. The Rays fought back, scoring two runs off the bullpen, but the 8-3 win never felt in jeopardy. In the bottom of the fifth, the momentum changed, the Dodgers scored four runs, then never looked back, scoring two more in the sixth. LA struck first, when Cody Bellinger hit a two-run home run off of Glasnow in the fourth inning, but TB kept it close in the following frame, when Kevin Kiermaier hit a solo home run. A future hall of famer versus a young twirler who regularly threw 100-mph pitches, respectively. Game 1 featured each team's ace, Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers versus Tyler Glasnow of the Rays. Another hard fought battle with the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series (4-3) put Tampa Bay in the Fall Classic, their second in team history, having lost to the Philadelphia Phillies (1-4) in the 2008 World Series. The Rays posted the best record (40-20) in the American League, winning the east division, then sweeping the Toronto Blue Jays (2-0) in the expanded Wild Card Series before defeating the New York Yankees (3-2) in the Division Series.

A hard fought battle with the Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series (4-3) put Los Angeles back in the Fall Classic, their third appearance over the previous four years. The Dodgers posted the best record (43-17) in the National League, winning the west division, then sweeping the Milwaukee Brewers (2-0) in the expanded Wild Card Series and the San Diego Padres (3-0) in the Division Series.
